What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the medical term applied to cosmetic surgery procedures that reconstruct or alter the nose. There are actually many different things that can be achieved with a rhinoplasty procedure.
A rhinoplasty can:
- Reduce nose size
- Make the nose more proportional
- Reduce nose / bridge width
- Eliminate “bumps” along the nose
- Alter the tip of the nose
- Improve nostril appearance
- Repair nasal asymmetry and deviation (rhinoplasty for deviated septum)
Because of the final option, rhinoplasty is sometimes more than a cosmetic procedure; it can help restore proper breathing function as well. Some people choose to have a nose reconstruction done for just one of these reasons or sometimes many of them together.
How does Rhinoplasty Work?
Every rhinoplasty procedure is unique because there are no two noses exactly the same. Generally, two things are targeted during rhinoplasty: cartilage and bone. During the nose reconstruction procedure:
- Anesthesia is applied, either local anesthesia or general anesthesia
- A small incision is made
- Cartilage and/or bone are adjusted using precise surgical tools
- Stitches and a medical dressing are applied
For minor rhinoplasty, existing bone and cartilage are used. For more major procedures, extra bone and cartilage are necessary and may be drawn from other parts of the body. In some unique cases, nasal implants are also used.
Some downtime is expected after a nose reconstruction procedure. Often, this may be up to a week or longer. In certain cases, medication may be provided to relieve pain and reduce swelling.
After the recovery period, a check-up is recommended to determine that the surgery was completed successfully.
