Is Lower Face Lift For You?
Lower face lifts are usually for men and women who have sagging or wrinkling skin. Some providers say it's best for patients between the ages of 35 and 50, but any patient who has a problem with the skin of their jawline and neck could be a candidate.
What Types of Skin Problems Does a Lower Face Lift Treat?
Lower face lift surgery treats a variety of problems including:
- Sagging skin on the neck and jaw line
- Jowls
- Sagging skin on the middle and lower cheeks
- Turkey necks
- Uneven neck contours or profiles
How is a Lower Face Lift Performed?
During a lower face lift, the provider will make a small incision or cut in front of the ear that extends back into the hairline. This allows the provider to reposition the tissues under the skin. Any excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is repositioned so it is tighter and some wrinkles are smoothed.
Your provider may also perform liposuction at the same time to remove any excess fat deposits or add a chin implant if necessary. Not every patient will need these interventions.
What to Expect During Lower Face Lift Surgery
The procedure is completed under local anesthesia—this means the patient is awake and given injections of numbing medication where needed. In some cases, patients may be given a prescription for a pill that can be taken before the procedure to help them relax if they feel nervous.
Healing usually takes between 7-10 days. Patients will have some soreness and bruising but should not have significant pain. Because patients are not asleep for the surgery, he or she can eat immediately following the procedure and won't have any nausea or vomiting.
Patients will need to wear a compression dressing over their incisions for two weeks and scars can take up to 3 months to heal.
